Serie A club AS Roma will reportedly look to sign 29-year-old Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd on loan from West Ham United in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by reputed Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Nayef Aguerd is the subject of interest from AS Roma. The struggling Serie A giants are eager to reinforce their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 29-year-old West Ham United outcast has emerged as a target for the Giallorossi.
AS Roma and West Ham have been in contact over a possible move for the 1996-born centre-back. The Giallorossi would look to secure Aguerd’s services on loan in the summer transfer window, but the Hammers want a permanent exit for the out-of-favour defender.
Nayef Aguerd and his West Ham United woes
Nayef Aguerd has struggled for stability since joining West Ham United from Stade Rennais in July 2022. The 29-year-old showed flashes of brilliance in his first two seasons with the East London club but could not establish himself as an undisputed first-choice starter under David Moyes. West Ham loaned him to Real Sociedad last summer, and the player was solid for La Real.
The Moroccan international was impressive during his loan spell with Real Sociedad, amassing nearly 3,000 minutes of game time across 36 appearances. While Aguerd has returned to West Ham and will unlikely return to Real Sociedad, he has no shortage of suitors, and AS Roma will aim to secure his services in the summer transfer window.
Serie A move on the horizon?
AS Roma’s interest in Nayef Aguerd is understandable. Mats Hummels has called time on his illustrious career after a short stint with the Giallorossi. In addition, Mario Hermoso and Marash Kumbulla face an uncertain future at Stadio Olimpico, forcing AS Roma to dip into the market for a centre-back. Meanwhile, recent reports have linked Evan Ndicka with a summer departure.
In addition, Gian Piero Gasperini will aim to leave an imprint on the first-team squad in his first summer transfer window. So, Aguerd has emerged as a viable target for AS Roma, with the Serie A outfit contacting West Ham to discuss a loan deal for the 1996-born centre-back.
However, the Hammers are keen on parting ways with the 29-year-old Moroccan international on a permanent deal. Meanwhile, recent reports have also linked Aguerd with other Serie A clubs, including Juventus. So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the player.
