Liverpool eyeing Ollie Watkins as Alexander Isak alternative

Liverpool could turn their attention towards Ollie Watkins as an alternative to top target Alexander Isak amid concerns about the Swede’s asking price.

According to Football Insider, Ollie Watkins may have emerged in Liverpool’s list of potential striker targets ahead of the summer. The England international’s future at Aston Villa has been called into doubt, and the Merseysiders view the striker as an alternative to top summer target Alexander Isak from a financial standpoint.

Liverpool have done some early business to address some of the key issues that were brewing in the squad. The Reds have managed to renew the contracts of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, which could now allow them to focus their efforts on securing key pieces in the transfer market.

Arne Slot is looking for a new striker as Liverpool are ready to get rid of Darwin Nunez in the summer after some abject performances this season. The Dutch tactician will seek a top-draw replacement for the No.9 position, and Alexander Isak is their top target and are optimistic about signing the Swede in the summer.

The big issue with this pursuit will be Newcastle United’s asking price, which could deal a blow to Liverpool’s transfer budget. They are in the market to strengthen other positions, and splashing a huge sum on one player would make things difficult on other fronts.

Arsenal are also in the hunt for Isak as part of a big summer spending spree that also involves a new left-winger. Whether the Gunners are prepared to match his asking price remains the question, with Newcastle United expected to make things difficult for the North Londoners and Liverpool especially if they end up qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Liverpool to target Ollie Watkins as Alexander Isak’s alternative

Arsenal failed with a bid for Ollie Watkins in January, and while reports have stated they are still keen, Mikel Arteta might have moved on from this striker. Liverpool are now considering him as an alternative to Isak, as Watkins has proven his worth in the position with 27 goal contributions this season in all competitions for Aston Villa. He will also be a much cheaper alternative to Isak, while also likely to be made available in the summer.

Watkins is evaluating his future at Aston Villa following his benching in key games in the Champions League. He could suit Liverpool in the larger scheme of things, with Watkins proving his ability to score regularly at the top level, however, the club are still expected to chase Isak.
