Mathys Tel will unlikely seek Tottenham stay without European football

Mathys Tel will reportedly join Tottenham permanently only if Spurs secures European football next season thus adding to the problems for Bayern Munich.

According to Football Insider, Mathys Tel is not fully convinced about continuing his career at Tottenham beyond his current loan spell. The French attacker wants to play European football, and will only green light a permanent switch to Spurs if they win the Europa League, which has added to Bayern Munich’s problems about this particular deal.

Bayern Munich were reluctant to allow Mathys Tel a departure in January, as they initially only wanted a permanent transfer. The French attacker has no future with the Bundesliga giants, who were eventually convinced by Tottenham to loan him out for the remainder of the season.

The deal included a hefty loan fee as well as a purchase option worth a reported £45 million, which is eventually what Bayern Munich wanted off the sale. Spurs are reportedly reluctant to pay the fee mentioned in the purchase clause, which does show the club does not value Mathys Tel in the same vein as Bayern Munich does.

Spurs have done something similar in the past with players on loan with a purchase option, as they effectively placed the selling club under pressure to offload their star at a lower price than the original agreement. The prime example that pops out is that of Dejan Kulusevski when Tottenham ended up paying far less than the value of the purchase option they had agreed with Juventus when the player was open to joining the North Londoners.

However, in Tel’s case, the scenario is different, as the player is now contemplating whether or not to make his move permanent. Tottenham are still undecided on the French whizkid, and now, there are doubts from the player’s side, as Bayern Munich could potentially see his value dropped significantly when the summer window opens.

Mathys Tel wants European football

Tel will only make his move to Tottenham permanent if they secure European football. By that, he seemingly wants the club to win the Europa League, as this is the only avenue for the club to stay in continental football, which does make matters tricky in this transfer move. Tel does have interest from other clubs probably expected to play in Europe, with Chelsea one of those still keen.

There will be doubts about whether Mathys Tel has a say in this move, as Tottenham can pretty much trigger the £45 million purchase option to force the issue. The French whizkid has three goals in his 11 appearances for Spurs so far including two in consecutive Premier League games. There are significant doubts from Tottenham and the player himself about making this move permanent, which will be resolved in the summer.
