Manchester United eyeing Jonas Adjetey swoop

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing 21-year-old Ghanaian defender Jonas Adjetey from Swiss club FC Basel in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Africa Foot, Jonas Adjetey is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window. So, the FC Basel defender has emerged as a target for the Premier League club.

Who is Jonas Adjetey?

Jonas Adjetey has established himself as one of the best young prospects in the Swiss Super League since joining FC Basel from Berekum Chelsea in August 2022. A native of Accra, the African defender spent his formative years in Ghana but has been in Europe for nearly three seasons.

The 21-year-old had to bide his time before breaking into the first-team squad at FC Basel, making his senior bow at the onset of the 2023/24 season. However, Adjetey has enjoyed his breakthrough at the Swiss club this season, turning out 30 times thus far while amassing nearly 2,500 minutes of game time.

Meanwhile, Adjetey’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. RC Lens recently attempted to land the Ghanaian international, but Manchester United will aim to beat the competition to his signature in the summer transfer window.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Manchester United’s interest in Jonas Adjetey is somewhat surprising. While Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans will likely depart from Old Trafford after the 2024/25 season ends, Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui have alleviated the need for a new centre-back due to their exploits this term. So, unless another central defender leaves, Manchester United do not need another centre-back.

Nevertheless, the Red Devils are combing the market for a centre-back, with several candidates, including Goncalo Inacio, emerging on their radar. So, Adjetey is a viable target for Manchester United, considering his age profile and potential. In addition, the 21-year-old African defender should not cost a bomb in the summer transfer window.

RC Lens failed with a bid worth €6 million, and FC Basel will hope to “obtain a much higher amount”. However, it will be surprising if the Swiss club’s demands are prohibitive for Manchester United.
