Liverpool could be forced to seek Joao Gomes alternative due to Wolves stance

Arne Slot might have to look past Joao Gomes to reinforce the Liverpool midfield unit in the summer transfer window.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has hit an unexpected roadblock after the Brazilian signed a fresh five-year deal with the Midlands club. The surprise extension, announced on April 1, has strengthened Wolves’ position and could force the Reds to either pivot to alternative midfield targets or postpone their move for Gomes until a later window.

Football Insider has suggested that Liverpool were seriously eyeing Gomes as a long-term midfield anchor, with insiders calling him the “perfect signing.” However, this new development gives Wolves firm control over the player’s immediate future, at least through the summer.

Wolves Determined to Hold Their Ground

Wolves have practically guaranteed their Premier League survival following a crucial win over Ipswich Town, but their focus now shifts to squad retention. With Matheus Cunha’s future also under intense speculation amid interest from Nottingham Forest and Cunha’s own ambitions to play for bigger clubs whereas Wolves are reluctant to let go of both their Brazilian stars in one window.

Under Vitor Pereira’s leadership, Gomes has become integral to the team’s structure. The club’s hierarchy is keen to avoid a mass exodus, especially if they are to build on this season and avoid another relegation scrap. With that in mind, they’ve made it clear that Gomes is not for sale, at least for now.

Liverpool Eyeing Midfield Alternatives

As a result, Liverpool are widening their search. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba has emerged as a strong candidate, though prying him away won’t come cheap. The Seagulls have a history of commanding hefty transfer fees for their top talents like Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella, and Ben White among them, and Baleba is expected to follow that trend.

New manager Arne Slot is reportedly prioritising midfield reinforcements this summer. While the Reds have rebuilt their engine room significantly in recent seasons, they are still looking for a player who can seamlessly slot into their high-tempo, possession-based approach.

Gomes would have been a stellar addition to Liverpool’s evolving midfield—tenacious, technically sound, and Premier League-proven. However, Wolves’ firm stance and the timing of the new contract complicate matters.

While Liverpool are right to explore alternatives, the club must be strategic in ensuring the player they bring in fits Arne Slot’s system. Carlos Baleba is a compelling option, but the cost may be steep. Either way, Liverpool’s midfield overhaul is far from over — and this summer could be just as pivotal as the last.
