Everton approach Merlin Rohl over summer move

David Moyes’ Everton have reportedly enquired about the availability of SC Freiburg midfield sensation Merlin Rohl.

According to a report from German outlet Kicker, Everton are interested in acquiring the services of Merlin Rohl, and they have held talks with the German youth international’s representatives regarding a potential this summer.

After coming up the ranks and making a name for himself, Rohl made the move to SC Freiburg in the summer of 2022. While the youngster did have an impressive start to life at the Bundesliga club, things have not been that great for him of late.

He was out injured in the initial phase of the season because of a torn syndesmosis. While the 1.91-metre-tall playmaker was back in action in no time, he has struggled to return to his best and recently picked up another heel injury.

Despite his struggles, there is still a lot of interest in him ahead of the summer transfer window. Everton have emerged as a potential destination for the 22-year-old, who can feature in a variety of roles in the midfield as well as on the flanks.

The Toffees want to reinforce their squad after a season that has not really gone according to plan. While David Moyes has steadied the ship, he is looking at the summer window as an opportunity to add more quality to his squad.

David Moyes wants to sign Rohl at Everton

The Merseyside club have already made a move to bring Merlin Rohl to the Premier League. They have held talks with the player’s representatives to learn more about a potential transfer. Moyes is the one driving Everton’s interest in the young German sensation.

He watched the 22-year-old in action during his time at West Ham United as they squared up against Freiburg four times in the Europa League back in 2023. Rohl made four substitute appearances and managed to impress the Scottish manager.

His display in the group final in London in mid-December 2023 convinced Moyes of his potential, as he injected energy into the game and created several chances for the visitors in the second half.

While Everton are keen on his signature, signing Rohl won’t be that straightforward as he penned a new deal last summer. Their sporting director, Jochen Saier, is aware of his massive potential and won’t let him leave on the cheap. They will look for a record fee in excess of the €25 million they received from Brentford for Kevin Schade in 2023.
