Manchester United are interested in acquiring the services of Sporting CP skipper Morten Hjulmand, who has flourished under Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United will undergo massive changes this summer. They will look for reinforcement in almost every area of the pitch but might prioritise reinforcing their midfield as a few of their stars are expected to be on the move.
According to a report from Stretty News, Manchester United could look to sign Morten Hjulmand to bolster the centre of the park. The Danish international flourished under Ruben Amorim at Sporting, and the Portuguese manager would love to reunite with him.
Hjulmand made a name for himself at Lecce before making the move to the Liga Portugal outfit in the summer of 2023 in a deal worth €20 million. He made an instant impact at Sporting and became one of their mainstays in no time.
The 25-year-old took his game to another level under Amorim and established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe. His ability to shield the backline and initiate attacks with his wide range of passing has earned him a strong reputation.
United are plotting a raid on Sporting for Hjulmand
Quite a few top clubs want to prise him away, and Amorim’s Manchester United are one of them. The Portuguese manager made the switch to Old Trafford back in November. While he was brought in to steady the ship, things haven’t improved at all.
They will be looking at the summer window as an opportunity to give the 40-year-old the type of players he needs to better implement his style. They will undergo quite a few changes in midfield as Christian Eriksen and Casemiro are expected to be on the move, while Kobbie Mainoo’s future is also up in the air.
They need to bring in a new defensive midfielder on a priority basis. United want someone who can take some loan off their skipper Bruno Fernandes and provide more competition to someone like Manuel Ugarte. They consider Hjulmand a perfect fit for their project. Having seen him succeed at Sporting under Amorim, the Red Devils are confident that he could help their cause.
While his contract at Sporting runs until the summer of 2028 and there is an €80 million release clause in his deal, United are confident that they can drive down the price to around €50-60 million during negotiations with the Portuguese outfit.
