Tottenham inch closer to landing Angel Gomes

Premier League heavyweights Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly closing in on signing 24-year-old English midfielder Angel Gomes in a Bosman move this summer.

According to a report by Football Insider, Angel Gomes is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites are scouring the market for a versatile midfielder heading into the summer transfer window. So, the LOSC Lille midfielder has emerged as a target for the North London club, with an agreement to sign the English international close.

Angel Gomes and his Ligue 1 journey

Angel Gomes has been among the most underrated midfielders in Ligue 1 since joining LOSC Lille from Manchester United in a Bosman move in August 2020. The Englishman has come leaps and bounds in the last four and a half years, although his stock has fallen in the ongoing campaign due to his contract situation.

Gomes’s decision not to sign a new contract with Les Dogues has meant he has managed only 1,069 minutes of game time across 20 appearances in all competitions while chipping in with two goals and one assist. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old will leave LOSC Lille as a free agent, with the situation capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe.

Recent reports have linked the English international with Barcelona. However, a return to the Premier League is on the cards, with Tottenham Hotspur among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.

Premier League return on the horizon?

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Angel Gomes is understandable. The Lilywhites are combing the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding Yves Bissouma’s long-term future. While the Lille midfielder will not be a like-for-like replacement for the Malian international, Tottenham might not need that profile next season.

With Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr making their mark, Tottenham can do with a box-to-box midfielder, making Gomes a viable target. Recent reports have claimed that the North London giants might be well-placed to sign the 24-year-old Englishman. The latest update has suggested that Gomes is closing in on joining Tottenham.

While West Ham United also wanted to sign the English international, he recently rejected a contract offer from the East London club. So, a Bosman move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is on the cards for the Lille midfielder.
