Manchester United and Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing 22-year-old French striker Hugo Ekitike from Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt this summer.
According to a report by Give Me Sport, Hugo Ekitike is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Eintracht Frankfurt striker is also a target for Newcastle United, and the Magpies are better placed to land the young centre-forward. The Bundesliga club’s asking price of £67 million has left Manchester United in a spot of bother due to the Red Devils’ modest budget.
Hugo Ekitike and his resurgence
Hugo Ekitike has resurrected his stuttering career since joining Eintracht Frankfurt from Paris Saint-Germain. The Frenchman initially joined the Bundesliga club on a loan deal in February 2024 before completing a permanent move in the subsequent summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old has established himself as one of the best young prospects in the Bundesliga in the last 12 months, with his productivity improving in the 2024/25 season. Ekitike has contributed to 27 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions, finding the back of the net 19 times and providing eight assists.
Meanwhile, the young French striker’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, are keen on signing the Eintracht Frankfurt prospect, with Manchester United and Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Manchester United’s interest in Hugo Ekitike is understandable. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window, considering Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have not been prolific in the final third. However, Eintracht Frankfurt’s asking price of £67 million poses a problem for Manchester United due to their modest budget.
As for Newcastle United, Ekitike is a long-term target, with the Tyneside outfit failing to sign him before he joined Paris Saint-Germain. The continued interest makes sense, considering Callum Wilson will likely depart from St. James’ Park this summer. In addition, Alexander Isak is a target for European bigwigs.
While Eintracht Frankfurt’s asking price of £67 million poses a problem for Manchester United, Newcastle United should have no qualms about meeting the Bundesliga club’s valuation. It will be interesting to see what the future has in store for the 22-year-old Frenchman.
