Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United have suffered a massive blow in their pursuit of RB Leipzig sensation Xavi Simons.
Manchester United are huge admirers of Xavi Simons, and they would love to acquire his services. However, according to a report from GiveMeSport, the Red Devils cannot afford to sign the Dutch international. Any deal for the Premier League to sign the RB Leipzig playmaker is considered a ‘non-starter’.
After an impressive loan spell at PSV Eindhoven, the former Barcelona youth product made the move to RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023. He initially joined them on a two loan deals from PSG, but the move was made permanent in the winter transfer window, thanks to his consistent performances.
The 21-year-old might have struggled with an ankle injury in the ongoing campaign, but he still has 13 goal contributions in his 25 outings. His performances and his massive potential have put him on the radar of some of the biggest clubs in the world.
Manchester United cannot afford Simons this summer
Manchester City are one of the clubs that have been linked with Simons, and they are reportedly willing to break the bank for him. Even their rivals, Manchester United, are keen on signing the Dutch sensation. The Red Devils have a long-standing interest in him.
People at Old Trafford admire him, and they would love to make him a part of their project. The Red Devils want someone who can support Bruno Fernandes, and Simons could be a perfect fit for Ruben Amorim’s system. He can even feature on the flanks, which is a bonus.
While Manchester United do want more firepower, and they will certainly undergo significant changes to their squad in the summer, a deal for Simons is set to be too expensive for them. His contract at the Bundesliga club runs until the summer of 2027, and they will only let him leave for a fee of around €80 million.
The valuation alone is enough to deter any interest from Amorim’s team. The price tag is beyond their capabilities, as they need to address quite a few issues in the summer. They will be looking for a new striker, a midfielder as well as a few options on the flanks. As a result, they cannot afford to go big for Simons.
