Liverpool yet to make progress in contract talks with Ibrahima Konate

Real Madrid have received a boost in their pursuit of Ibrahima Konate, as Liverpool are yet to make progress in contract renewal talks.

According to a report from Football Insider, Ibrahima Konate could end up leaving Liverpool this summer as the Reds have failed to make any progress in renewal talks. They could listen to offers for their defensive mainstay amidst interest from European giants, Real Madrid.

Konate arrived at the Merseyside club in the summer of 2021 after making a name for himself at RB Leipzig. He has only gone from strength to strength over the years and has been one of the mainstays in defence in recent seasons.

He has featured in 34 matches this season, accumulating over 2,700 minutes and registering four goal contributions. While he remains a key figure in the team under Arne Slot, his future has become a big talking point.

His current deal runs out in the summer of 2026, as a result, the Reds have been in talks to renew his contract. But they haven’t made any significant progress. His contract situation has put interested clubs on red alert, and they could try to lure him away in the summer.

Real Madrid could sign Konate this summer

Meanwhile, Liverpool could be open to a move away in the summer as they won’t want to lose the 25-year-old for free next year. Real Madrid have emerged as a potential destination for Konate. The Spanish giants want to reinforce their backline on a priority basis.

Injuries to Eder Militao and David Alaba over the last two years have highlighted the lack of depth at the back. They want to address that issue in the summer, and Konate is a part of their wishlist.

While Liverpool could be ready to listen to offers for the French international, it might depend on the future of their skipper, Virgil van Dijk. His contract runs out in the summer, and if he leaves as a free agent, they might not want to lose both their starting centre-backs in the same window. However, if the Dutch international signs an extension, Konaté’s departure becomes increasingly likely.
