Tottenham are considering a summer move for Joao Gomes, but they face competition from Premier League rivals for the Wolves midfielder.
According to Give Me Sport, Tottenham are already considering an approach for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. The Brazilian has been impressive for the Midlands side since arriving in 2023, and Spurs view him as an important summer acquisition, although they face big competition from Premier League rivals like Liverpool.
Tottenham are set for some key changes to their playing squad ahead of the summer. Ange Postecoglou has had one of the toughest seasons in charge in his professional management career, with Spurs putting in some poor performances, largely influenced by the many injuries to their key stars.
Those displays have given Postecoglou and largely Tottenham chiefs some thinking to do ahead of the summer transfer window, as they ponder strengthening the squad in different areas. One of them is the central midfield, which has been a source of frustration for large parts.
Tottenham could sell Yves Bissouma following an underwhelming campaign on many fronts, which could signal a move for a new midfielder. One of their prime targets comes from Wolves as Spurs were keen on Joao Gomes late in last summer’s window.
There was no chance of Wolves letting their key star leave in the middle of the season when they were in the thick of a relegation fight. Wolves are likely to fight hard to keep hold of Gomes ahead of the summer, but they might concede defeat as the Brazilian might be attracted by the big interest, especially from Tottenham.
Tottenham face challenges in pursuit of Joao Gomes
Tottenham are aware of the challenges ahead in their pursuit of Gomes, starting with Wolves’ asking price of at least £50 million for the midfielder. That aside, Spurs will face big competition from the likes of Manchester United, while Liverpool are also keen to sign him. Arne Slot wants more options in the midfield, and the Brazilian international is a viable target.
Tottenham could stake a claim at being one of the frontrunners if they were to win the Europa League, which in turn gives them access to next season’s Champions League. The big hurdle for Spurs in their race for the £50 million-rated Premier League midfielder may not be the money, but the interest of Liverpool and probably even Manchester United.
