Liverpool will unlikely sign 25-year-old Argentine international Julian Alvarez from La Liga club Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Football Insider, Julian Alvarez has been the subject of interest from Liverpool for a long time. Fernando Hidalgo, the Atletico Madrid attacker’s agent, recently revealed that the Merseyside outfit wanted to sign the player last summer. However, a move for the Argentine international in the upcoming summer transfer window is unlikely.
Julian Alvarez and his exploits in La Liga
Julian Alvarez has established himself as one of the best players in La Liga since joining Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in a deal worth £80 million last summer. The move surprised many, considering the South American attacker was a pivotal figure for the Premier League champions under Pep Guardiola.
However, the 25-year-old attacker has justified his move after becoming a mainstay in the final third for Atletico Madrid. While Alvarez was slow off the blocks in the 2024/25 season, he has come leaps and bounds in the last few months. The player has contributed to 28 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions, finding the back of the net 23 times and providing five assists.
Meanwhile, Alvarez’s exploits for Atletico Madrid have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Recent reports have linked the Argentine international with Barcelona and Manchester United. However, a few updates have mooted a summer move to Liverpool.
Premier League return on the horizon?
Liverpool can do with a player like Julian Alvarez in the summer transfer window. The Reds are scouring the market for a productive attacker heading into the window amid uncertainties surrounding Mohamed Salah’s long-term future. The Egyptian international has entered the final few months of his contract and might leave Liverpool as a free agent.
In addition, Darwin Nunez faces an uncertain future at Anfield after struggling in the 2024/25 season thus far. Interestingly, the Uruguayan international is reportedly a target for Atletico Madrid. However, Pete O’Rourke has ruled out Liverpool pursuing Alvarez in the summer transfer window.
Atletico Madrid will likely demand a premium to part ways with the 25-year-old Argentine international, and the Reds do not want to pay more than £80 million to secure his services. So, it will be interesting to see who bolsters Liverpool’s offensive unit in the summer transfer window.
