Cristian Romero open to joining Real Madrid

Cristian Romero could be open to the idea of joining Real Madrid if they come calling as there are doubts over a new Tottenham deal.

According to Football Insider, Cristian Romero might lean towards joining Real Madrid should they come calling for his signature in the summer. The Argentine World Cup Winner could have a contract stand-off with Tottenham, who would demand a significant fee to sell the centre-back.

A lack of Champions League football could have major repercussions for any club about revenue and their power to keep hold of top players. Tottenham are likely to find themselves in this boat as they are likely to miss out on a top-four or five finish, although they could make it to the Premier European competition by winning the Europa League this season.

Either way, the club are not in a position where they guarantee a consistent presence in the Champions League, which could affect their chances of keeping players like Cristian Romero. The 26-year-old Tottenham mainstay has been a rock-solid performer for Ange Postecoglou, although ahead of the summer there are rumours of a potential departure.

Tottenham could sell Romero if he refuses to sign a new deal, with the defender set to enter the final two years of his agreement. Spurs could potentially get the best value for the 26-year-old in the upcoming summer window, although Champions League football and a strong end to their otherwise dismal season could change that.

As things stand, there are a few clubs keen on Romero, with Real Madrid eager to revive their chase in the summer. Should the Spanish giants come calling, the 26-year-old Tottenham mainstay might be open to joining them as is the case with most players. Spurs, for their part, will demand a significant fee, which will test Real Madrid and at least show how interested they are in the Argentine World Cup winner.

Real Madrid to sign a new defender

Real Madrid’s links to Romero may not surprise many, as Carlo Ancelotti’s side have endured defensive injuries this season. The Spanish giants are expected to sign at least one centre-back in the summer, with Dean Huijsen one of their main targets.

William Saliba was also a big target, although he might be the most difficult one to get among their many targets, especially now that incoming sporting director Andrea Berta is prioritising a new contract for the Frenchman. Romero might be the next best thing for Real Madrid, although one should not discount the possibility of Huijsen especially after he received a Spain call-up for the current international break.
