West Ham United have reportedly decided to take a back seat in their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur target Angel Gomes.
According to a report from Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, West Ham United have decided to withdraw their interest in the services of Angel Gomes. The East London club were keen on adding the English international to their squad, and they even made an initial offer. But, things have not gone according to plan for them.
Gomes came up the ranks at Manchester United and got promoted to their first team back in 2019. Things did not work out for him at Old Trafford, and he left his childhood club in search of a more prominent role.
The 24-year-old’s decision to move to LOSC Lille has helped him revive his career. He has established himself as a key figure in the team, and his consistent performances have opened the doors to the England national team.
While he prefers playing as an attacking midfielder, Angel Gomes has excelled in a deeper-lying midfield role at the Ligue 1 club. The Englishman remains one of the first names on their team sheet, but with his contract running out at the end of the season, his departure is almost certain.
West Ham’s failed attempt to sign Gomes
Angel Gomes is not keen on penning a new deal with LOSC Lille, and he is exploring his options as multiple top clubs want to sign him. West Ham United are one of the clubs that wanted to acquire his services in a Bosman move. The Hammers want to back Graham Potter in the summer transfer window and give him the needed resources.
They feel Gomes could be a great fit in his system, and his versatility could come in handy. As a result, they did put forward an initial offer to bring him back to the Premier League. The initial offer was one of the most substantial deals they had ever proposed to a player, and they were confident it would be enough to secure his signing.
But, West Ham United are yet to receive a response. As a result, their owner David Sullivan has decided that the club should now move on from the English international as he remains in talks with other clubs, including rivals Tottenham.
The North London club want to add more quality and depth to their midfield. They believe the former Manchester United midfielder could certainly be of great help to Ange Postecoglou. As a result, they are looking to add him to their squad. While the Hammers have taken a back seat for now, they could make a return if the player shows willingness to join them.
