Premier League heavyweights Chelsea have decided against reinforcing their goalkeeping department in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by The Times, Chelsea will not dip into the market for a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window. Robert Sanchez has attracted criticism for his error-strewn showings in the 2024/25 season. However, Enzo Maresca wants the Spanish international to compete with Filip Jorgensen in the 2025/26 campaign.
Chelsea and a frustrating goalkeeping roster
Robert Sanchez has been with Chelsea since August 2023, arriving from Brighton & Hove Albion 18 months ago. Since then, the Spaniard has been in and out of the starting lineup, although he has been the first-choice goalkeeper for most of Enzo Maresca’s stint as the West London club’s head coach.
However, the 27-year-old has made the joint-most errors leading to a goal in the Premier League this season. Sanchez’s error-prone performances have forced Maresca to deploy Filip Jorgensen as the first-choice goalkeeper in the last few weeks. However, the 22-year-old stopper, who arrived from Villarreal last summer, has not been entirely convincing either, recently making a mistake in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa.
In addition, Sanchez has drawn the ire of fans and pundits alike, with Gary Neville recently claiming the Spanish international is “not good enough” for Chelsea. So, it is hardly surprising that widespread reports have linked Chelsea with several goalkeepers ahead of the summer transfer window.
What next?
Recent reports have linked the West London club with Marco Carnesecchi, Zion Suzuki, and Bart Verbruggen, among others. However, Peter Rutzler of The Times has claimed that the Blues do not want to reinforce their goalkeeping department in the summer transfer window, even though Sanchez has flattered to deceive.
Rutzler has suggested that Enzo Maresca wants Sanchez and Jorgensen to continue to compete for a starting berth next season. In addition, Mike Penders will likely come in contention to vie for the first-choice goalkeeper’s spot in the 2025/26 campaign.
The Blues believe Penders has “elite potential”, and they consider him as their long-term first-choice goalkeeper. So, it will be surprising to see Chelsea dipping into the market for a new shot-stopper in the summer transfer window.
