Liverpool formulate new contract offer for Virgil van Dijk

Arne Slot’s Liverpool are reportedly preparing a fresh contract offer for their defensive mainstay Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool have been on fire in the ongoing season; they are favourites to win the Premier League and can certainly go a long way in the UEFA Champions League as well. While Arne Slot has had a dream start to life at Anfield, there is a lot that needs to be taken care of, including agreeing new contracts with stalwarts like Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Not only do the Reds need to prepare themselves for the summer transfer window, but the future of some of their mainstays is still up in the air. Virgil van Dijk is one of the stars whose contract runs out at the end of the season. They are looking to extend his stay at Anfield and according to a report from Fichajes, the Reds are working on a new contract offer for the 78-cap Dutch international.

Van Dijk will go down as one of the best defenders to have ever played for the Merseyside club. He made the move to Liverpool at the start of 2018 and had established himself as a key figure in no time. He has been key to all the success they have had over the years.

The 33-year-old did have a dip in form, but he has been one of their standout performers under Slot. The Reds’ skipper has featured in a total of 36 games and has even contributed towards six goals. While he was been doing wonders on the pitch, his future has been a big talking point as his contract runs out in June.

Liverpool closing in on a new deal for van Dijk

Multiple reports have suggested that Virgil van Dijk could look to part ways with Liverpool. But, the Reds are quite clear about the fact that they want their skipper to continue at the club for at least another season. They have been working against the clock to secure his services for another year, and negotiations have advanced in recent weeks.

Both parties are very close to reaching an agreement on a new deal. Van Dijk is quite comfortable at the Merseyside club. While he has offers from across Europe, he won’t mind staying for another year. The board views his renewal as a top priority, believing his presence will be crucial amid potential major squad changes next summer.
