Newcastle United are interested in a move for Marcus Tavernier, with Bournemouth reportedly demanding at least £25 million for the attacker.
According to The Sun, Newcastle United has set sights on Marcus Tavernier ahead of the summer as Bournemouth named their price. The 25-year-old was once on the books of the Magpies as a youth player, as Eddie Howe could eye him as a smart signing during the close season.
Eddie Howe wants to continue building a competitive team and will be keen to add some quality stars during the summer. The Magpies have a fight on their hands to keep hold of some of their notable stars like Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes, and Anthony Gordon, as Champions League football will be crucial in order to retain those stars.
The Magpies did take a big step towards that with a nervy win over Nottingham Forest, which moved them up to fifth. Howe remains confident of returning to the Champions League and has already drawn up plans to strengthen the squad, with the attacking setup at the forefront of his objectives.
For instance, Howe wants to strengthen the wide areas with players like Bryan Mbeumo linked. The Newcastle United boss has other names, such as Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth, and now he is keen on the latter’s teammate Marcus Tavernier.
Newcastle United were interested in Tavernier ahead of January, although they knew out of hand the Bournemouth man wasn’t available in the winter window. However, they are willing to make a concerted move in the summer, as Howe feels the former Newcastle United youth can shine in a different role at St James Park.
Bournemouth name Marcus Tavernier’s price
Bournemouth are under no pressure to sell their top players, including Tavernier, although they will reportedly consider offers in the region of £25 million. The 25-year-old has predominantly played on the left wing but remains equally capable of operating on the right, as well as a midfielder in a trio.
Newcastle United are interested, as Howe views him as a quality addition to their attack that would certainly improve depth and competition. It will be a matter of where Bournemouth finishes, which could affect the £25 million for the Premier League winger’s future during the summer, as the club might even consider keeping him should they make it to one of the European competitions themselves.
