Everton could reignite their interest in Lyon playmaker Rayan Cherki, although two important factors complicate a deal.
According to Football Insider, Everton could reignite their interest in Rayan Cherki ahead of the summer. The Club were eager to sign the Lyon playmaker back in January, but unfortunately, things turned out differently for the French side as they now play a summer approach. However, two important factors could complicate the move for the Toffees.
Rayan Cherki was considered a certain departure from Lyon in January, as the club had to sort out their finances to stay afloat in Ligue 1. The French side was handed a provisional relegation to Ligue 2 unless they could sort out their finances, which they eventually did following developments with their owners’ other club, Botafogo.
In any case, Lyon did not feel the need to sell their top-rated stars in January, such as Ernest Nuamah and Rayan Cherki. The latter had big interest from Everton in January, and while they failed to lure him, the Toffees are expected to reignite their interest in the summer window.
Whether that is a decision from David Moyes remains to be seen, as the manager has only rejoined the club following the sacking of Dean Dyche. However, the club views Cherki as someone who can elevate their quality next season as they move into a new stadium.
While there is a possibility that Everton can make a move for the 21-year-old playmaker, he might not view them as his first choice destination. In fact, there are two big complications ahead for Everton that may see the race for the Lyon star derail.
Everton facing complications in Rayan Cherki chase
For starters, Everton are nowhere near the size of some of the other interested parties in Cherki. The 21-year-old playmaker has massive interest from Champions League playing teams, and that is the first complication in the chase, as the Lyon man wants to play in the top-tier European competition.
The second comes from Moyes, who is not overly eager to recruit foreign players, as he wishes to build a core of young English stars. That idea may be a costly affair for Everton, but the manager is thinking about the long-term future, as he wishes to take the club away from their current levels.
