Tottenham are ready to proceed with a deal for Johnny Cardoso next summer, as they have pre-agreed terms with Real Betis.
According to Football Insider, Tottenham could trigger Johnny Cardoso’s pre-agreed release clause next summer in the stipulated time to sign the defensive midfielder. Spurs have already pre-agreed terms of a deal as personal terms are set to be a formality of sorts as they seek to strengthen the midfield position.
Tottenham made a wise decision to get a pre-agreement in place with Real Betis for promising midfielder Johnny Cardoso last summer. Spurs sold Giovanni Lo Celso back to Betis for no cost but ensured they secured a priority option on the USMNT star.
Tottenham can sign the highly rated defensive midfielder for €25 million, although they will have to activate the clause within a stipulated period of time. Cardoso has been impressive for Betis this season, starting 15 of their 22 La Liga games, and he could be heading to north London next summer.
Spurs even considered bringing forward the deal in January, but the conditions around that idea did not suit Real Betis, or so the belief is. Cardoso has other suitors, with Real Madrid ready to rival Tottenham for the signing of the highly-rated defensive midfielder.
In any case, Tottenham have a favourable clause that favours them as priority suitors, and they are now ready to activate the €25 million clause. It remains to be seen whether Spurs will pay the sum in one payment or structure it for the next few years.
Tottenham keen on signing a defensive midfielder
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou is not satisfied with his current options in the Tottenham midfield. Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have disappointed this season, and there is no realistic option to play that No.6 role on a consistent basis.
Hence, Daniel Levy will feel good about pre-agreeing terms for a talented midfielder like Cardoso, as it makes the deal pretty straightforward. Personal terms are seen more as a formality of sorts, as Tottenham are not expected to face any significant complications in their quest to land the midfielder next summer. However, it remains to be seen whether he is the only defensive midfielder they bring.
