Graham Potter was instrumental in Evan Ferguson’s loan signing. Ferguson might have had other suitors before signing for the Hammers.
According to Football Insider, Graham Potter could have played an instrumental role in persuading Evan Ferguson to join West Ham in the January window. The Brighton striker might have had other offers on the table as he looked to leave the south coast club in search of regular football.
Evan Ferguson was considered a huge talent right after his breakthrough for Brighton a few years ago, but injuries have stalled his development. This season, the arrival of Fabian Hurselar has limited his minutes at the Amex, as he prefers other players ahead of the Irish international.
He was desperate to find a solution, albeit temporarily, to add minutes under his belt, as a loan move away from Brighton seemed like a possible solution in January. Ferguson did have plenty of clubs chasing him, including West Ham United, who had set sights on him well before the winter window opened.
Meanwhile, West Ham has had massive problems on the front line. They just spent more than a month with Danny Ings as their only recognised striker. Michail Antonio will not play again in the foreseeable future following a road accident, while Niclas Fullkrug’s hamstring injury is likely to keep him out for many months.
Hence, the Hammers needed a new striker as they found themselves in pole position for Ferguson. However, that may not have been the case with Julen Lopetegui in charge, but the arrival of former Brighton manager Graham Potter may have changed the equation for the London outfit.
Graham Potter key to Evan Ferguson’s deal
When a striker like Ferguson becomes available, even for a short period, many clubs are in the mix. Arsenal was mentioned, but they were not keen on the forward, while Chelsea was also mentioned many times in the reports. The Hammers signed the attacker on loan, and Potter has been credited with the move, as he was instrumental in convincing the star.
Potter managed Ferguson and is even credited with giving him his breakthrough at Brighton. Hence, the manager was instrumental in persuading the striker to join the Hammers, where there is a guarantee of a starting spot for him in the lineup, which would serve all parties well for the remainder of the season.
