Crystal Palace will reportedly look to sign 26-year-old English winger Marcus Edwards on a loan deal without a purchase option from Portuguese club Sporting CP.
According to a report by Record, as relayed by Sport Witness, Marcus Edwards is the subject of interest from Crystal Palace. The Eagles have been scouring the market for a versatile attacker heading into the winter transfer window. So, the Sporting CP winger has emerged as a target, with the South London outfit eager to sign the 26-year-old forward on a dry loan deal.
The rise and fall of Marcus Edwards
Marcus Edwards has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Sporting CP from Vitoria Guimaraes in January 2022. The Englishman has blown hot and cold in the last three years, enjoying spells when he has been an undisputed first-choice starter while being a bit-part player in other periods.
The 26-year-old winger has struggled for game time in the 2024/25 season, with his stock plummeting. Edwards has not even completed 500 minutes of game time across ten appearances in all competitions while chipping in with three goals.
However, the English winger’s stock in the market remains reasonably high, with several Premier League clubs setting their sights on him. Recent reports have linked the Sporting CP outcast with Everton, with Crystal Palace also vying for his signature in the winter transfer window.
London return on the horizon?
Marcus Edwards has been on Crystal Palace’s radar for a long time. The South London outfit mulled over signing the Sporting CP forward in the summer transfer window in the summer transfer window before the deal failed to see the light of day. The continued interest makes sense despite his struggles at the Portuguese club.
Oliver Glasner wants more firepower in the final third to take some burden off Eberechi Eze, Ismaila Sarr, and Jean-Philippe Mateta. So, the Sporting CP winger has emerged as a viable target. The report has revealed how the Englishman’s price tag has dropped from €20-30 million in the summer to €8 million now.
However, Crystal Palace will not pursue a permanent deal for the English winger. Instead, the South London outfit will aim to seal a dry loan move for the 26-year-old, not including a purchase option. It will be interesting to see if such an arrangement appeals to Sporting CP.
