Newcastle United have been informed about Rayan Cherki’s asking price by Lyon, as the French club find themselves in a stronger position than before.
According to Football Insider, Lyon are demanding at least £33 million to sell coveted midfielder Rayan Cherki, which will be a problem for Newcastle United. The Premier League side had hoped to lure the 21-year-old midfield target at a decent price given Lyon’s financial troubles, which have now eased following a fresh development.
Newcastle United are looking for opportunistic signings this month, as Eddie Howe is keen to bring solid reinforcements to his squad. They had some plans to target some players, including beleaguered Ligue 1 side Lyon’s coveted midfielder Rayan Cherki.
The magpies had hoped to take advantage of Lyon’s financial situation and bring Cherki on the cheap. There are many complications in the chase for Newcastle United, beginning with the level of interest in Cherki, with Bayern Munich and Liverpool among those keen.
A report earlier stated Liverpool were ready to agree on a deal worth €22 million, which was further expanded as the sum the player had agreed with Lyon to let him leave. As it stands, Lyon have increased their asking price, which will infuriate Newcastle United, as the beleaguered French side now want at least £33 million to sell the 21-year-old midfield target.
There are plenty of PSR-related issues with Newcastle United before they can spend that much money this month. The summer window will be seen as more favourable for the magpies to spend big on recruits, as Lyon is now reportedly prepared to keep hold of Cherki at least until the summer.
Lyon’s problems were put to ease after the latest update
Lyon have found themselves in a stronger position than earlier as there has been a massive new development in the background. The sale of Luiz Henrique from Botafogo to Zenit St Petersburg has landed a massive €33 million windfall as the report statres Lyon held the economic rights to the player as they and Botafogo share the same owner.
This windfall has put Lyon at ease with their situation as they had been handed a transfer ban as well as a provisional relegation to Ligue 2, with the latter depending on how they improve their financial situation. As for the former, they are still unable to bring in reinforcements, which could see them keep hold of stars like Cherki and Ernest Nuamah at least until the summer window.
