Everton recently approached Portuguese club Sporting CP to discuss a move for 26-year-old out-of-favour English winger Marcus Edwards in the winter transfer window.
According to a report by Caught Offside, Marcus Edwards is the subject of interest from Everton. The Toffees have been scouring the market for a wide attacker heading into the winter transfer window and have set their sights on the Sporting CP winger. They have already contacted the Portuguese club to enquire about the 26-year-old, who will cost around €12 million this month.
Marcus Edwards has seen his stock plummet in the last 12-18 months. The Englishman was an instant hit at Sporting CP and produced many game-changing performances in his first few seasons with the Portuguese club. However, he has been in and out of the starting lineup of late.
The 26-year-old out-of-favour winger has not even manage 500 minutes of game time across ten appearances in all comptetitions while chipping in with three goals. However, Edwards’s long-term future is away from Sporting CP, with the Portuguese club ready to part ways with him in the winter transfer window.
Edwards does not share a healthy working relationship with new head coach Rui Borges. In addition, the English winger has entered the final 18 months of his contract. So, Sporting CP should cash in on the out-of-favour attacker, with Everton among his prospective suitors in the winter transfer window.
Everton’s interest in Marcus Edwards makes sense. The Toffees have been scouring the market for a wide attacker heading into the winter transfer window due to the inconsistent displays by Jack Harrison. In addition, Dwight McNeil has struggled with fitness issues this season. So, Ernest Nuamah recently emerged as a target for Everton.
However, the Toffees have failed to land the Ghanaian international again, and they will unlikely sign him from Lyon. So, Everton should identify alternatives, with several candidates, including Timothy Weah, emerging as targets.
