Maxwel Cornet set to join Genoa, medical scheduled

West Ham United outcast Maxwel Cornet is on the verge of ending his loan spell with Southampton and embarking on another temporary stint, this time to Genoa.

According to a report by the Standard, Maxwel Cornet is on the cusp of embarking on a second loan spell this season. The West Ham United outcast has spent the first half of the 2024/25 campaign with Southampton but will join Serie A club Genoa for the second half of this term.

Maxwel Cornet and his struggles

Maxwel Cornet has seen his progress come to a stuttering halt since joining West Ham United from Burnley in August 2022. The former French youth international barely featured for the East London club in his first two seasons at the London Stadium before they hauled him off on loan to Southampton last summer.

However, the 28-year-old has not made his mark at St. Mary’s, managing only 187 minutes of game time across four appearances in all competitions. Cornet’s struggles for Southampton have forced West Ham United to terminate his loan spell with the Saints, with a new stint on the cards for the struggling wide player.

An adventure in Serie A is on the cards for the Ivory Coast international, with Genoa on the cusp of securing the agreement over a loan deal for the West Ham United outcast. The struggling wide player will spend the second half of the 2024/25 season at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

Serie A adventure on the horizon

Genoa’s interest in Maxwel Cornet makes sense. Aaron Martin is the only fit left-back in Patrick Vieira’s squad, while Fabio Miretti, a midfielder, has played on the left flank in recent weeks. So, the Serie A outfit can do with a new wide player, with a loan agreement on the cards.

Meanwhile, a report by Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t West Ham Zone) has revealed that Cornet will “arrive in Italy tonight” and undergo his medical tests with Genoa within the coming 24 hours. So, if all goes well, the former French youth international will complete his loan move to the Serie A club imminently.

It will be interesting to see if the 28-year-old Ivory Coast international can resurrect his stuttering career after completing the loan move to Genoa. However, with his progress coming to a halt at Southampton FC, something had to give.
