Newcastle United considering Aaron Ramsdale swoop

Newcastle United are reportedly mulling over signing 26-year-old English international Aaron Ramsdale from fellow Premier League club Southampton this month.

According to a report by The Sun, Aaron Ramsdale is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies have been scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the winter transfer window as Martin Dubravka closes in on joining Saudi Pro League club Al Shabab. So, the 26-year-old Southampton shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit.

Aaron Ramsdale and a topsy-turvy career

Aaron Ramsdale has been a rare bright spot since joining Southampton from Arsenal in a deal worth £25 million in the summer transfer window. While the Englishman has made his mark between the sticks, the Saints have endured a dreadful 2024/25 campaign, which might end in relegation from the Premier League.

So, the 26-year-old has managed only two clean sheets in 14 outings across all competitions thus far this term while conceding 29 goals. However, Ramsdale’s stock in the market remains high, and a move across the Premier League might be on the cards for him.

The English international is a target for Newcastle United, with the Tyneside outfit eager to sign a goalkeeper in the winter transfer window. While James Trafford is a target for Newcastle United, they have identified the Southampton shot-stopper as a viable alternative to the Burnley star.

Move across the Premier League on the cards?

Newcastle United’s desire to sign a goalkeeper in the winter transfer window makes sense. Martin Dubravka will likely depart from St. James’ Park this month, with the Slovakian international closing in on joining Saudi Pro League club Al Shabab. So, his departure will create a void in the goalkeeping department, and Eddie Howe wants competition for Nick Pope’s spot.

So, Trafford has emerged as the top target for Newcastle United, with Ramsdale a solid alternative. However, convincing Southampton to part ways with the 26-year-old Englishman midway through the 2024/25 season might be a tall order.

Southampton might be a relegation-threatened club, but keeping Ramsdale will keep the Saints’ bid to remain in the Premier League alive. So, it will be interesting to see if Newcastle United can sign the English international or if they turn to an alternative.
