Thomas Partey happy at Arsenal but exit possibility remains

Thomas Partey is reportedly content at Arsenal, but he could still end up parting ways with Mikel Arteta’s team in 2025.

According to Charles Watts via Caught Offside, Thomas Partey remains a key part of Arsenal’s first-team, and he is quite happy at the North London club. However, he could still end up parting ways if he has a better offer from elsewhere.

Partey made a name for himself while playing for Atletico Madrid before making a big-money move to Arsenal towards the end of 2020. The Gunners forked out €50 million to sign the Ghanaian international.

He has been a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s team since arriving at the club. While injuries did trouble him a lot during the 2023/24 season, the 31-year-old has bounced back in some fashion this time around. He has been involved in 28 matches so far and has even contributed towards four goals.

The former Atletico Madrid star has been their best performer in the centre of the park. While Thomas Partey is still one of the first names on their team sheet this season, his future at Arsenal is not certain with his contract running out at the end of the season.

Charles Watts on Partey’s contract extension

While Thomas Partey is quite happy playing under Arteta, Watts believes he could still choose to leave the club if he receives a better offer from another club.

In his Daily Briefing column for CaughtOffside, Watts suggested, “It feels like Thomas Partey’s contract situation is going to become a source of real debate as the season goes on. Partey has shown with his performances this season that he can still perform at the highest level and perhaps, more importantly, he has shown that his body can still stand up to the demands of a Premier League season.

“But he will be 32 by the start of next season, so I can understand why Arsenal would be reluctant to offer him a big new deal. He’s one of the club’s biggest earners and his past injury history is enough to suggest that an extension for the midfielder would be a risk.

“I think a big part of what happens will revolve around Partey himself. He will probably get offers from abroad that will be far more lucrative and far longer than what he will be offered by Arsenal, should they even opt to offer him new terms. So that will leave him with a big decision to make as he gets towards the latter stages of his career.

“I know that Partey is happy at Arsenal, but that doesn’t mean he will stay if he gets a better offer elsewhere. What his performances have shown this season though is that when fully fit he can still play a major part in this Arsenal side. He’s been Arsenal’s best midfielder, there’s no doubt about that and that’s why there is always a lot of frustration from fans when he is asked to fill-in at right-back by Mikel Arteta.”

Will Thomas Partey pen a new deal?

Arsenal will surely consider handing Partey a new deal, given the kind of performances he has put up this season. The Ghanaian international has proven that without any injury concerns, he can still put in consistent performances in the English top flight.

But, given his injury track record and the fact that he will be 32 ahead of next season, Arsenal are unlikely to offer him a long-term deal. Since he is amongst their highest earners, the Gunners will be very careful with what kind of offer they put forward.

If Arsenal do offer him an extension the final decision will rest in the hands of Partey as he will certainly have far more lucrative and longer contract offers from clubs across the globe. While he is quite happy in North London, this could be his final opportunity to pen a long-term deal, as a result, he surely has a massive decision to make in a few months time.
