Tottenham Hotspur recently submitted an offer to sign Richard Rios but failed to convince Palmeiras with the bid for the 24-year-old midfielder.
According to a report by Italian outlet Area Napoli, Richard Rios is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants have been scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the winter transfer window. So, the 24-year-old Palmeiras star has emerged as a target, with the Brasilerao Serie A club turning down a bid from the Premier League outfit.
The rise of Richard Rios
Richard Rios has seen his stock soar since a breakout campaign at the 2024 Copa America. The South American midfielder was instrumental as Colombia reached the final before failing to beat Argentina. Meanwhile, he has been in Brazil for years but has risen in prominence during his spell with Palmeiras.
The 24-year-old joined Palmeiras from Guarani in March 2023 and has gone from strength to strength in the last two years. Rios has turned out over 100 times thus far for Verdao while chipping in with seven goals and six assists.
Meanwhile, the Colombian midfielder’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, have set their sights on the Copa America breakout star, with widespread reports linking him with Manchester United last year. However, Tottenham will look to secure his services this month.
London calling?
Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Richard Rios is somewhat perplexing. While the South American midfielder can be a top-notch addition to the midfield unit at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, they should only pursue his signature after offloading a midfielder this year.
Ange Postecoglou has Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, and Archie Gray in his squad for the midfield roles. So, unless one of them leaves, Tottenham should not pursue another midfielder. Nevertheless, Rios is a target, with the North London outfit already lodging a bid to secure his services.
However, the offer has not convinced Palmeiras, with Verdao turning it down. So, it will be interesting to see if Tottenham will return with an improved proposal to sign the 24-year-old Colombian international, with Napoli looking to beat them to his signature.
