Greek giants Olympiacos are reportedly keen on signing struggling 24-year-old Brazilian international Antony on loan from Manchester United this month.
According to a report by The Sun, Antony is the subject of interest from Olympiacos. The Greek giants have been scouring the market for a new wide attacker heading into the winter transfer window. So, the struggling Manchester United winger has emerged as a target, with the Red Devils ready to facilitate a loan exit for the Brazilian international.
Antony and his topsy-turvy ride at Manchester United
Antony has struggled to make his mark since joining Manchester United from Ajax in a mega-money deal worth £86 million in August 2022. The move surprised many due to the incredible outlay that the Premier League club made to secure the services of the South American winger.
The 24-year-old has vindicated those feelings, as he turned out nearly 100 times thus far for Manchester United but contributed to only 17 goals by finding the back of the net 12 times and providing five assists. In addition, things have gone from bad to worse this season, with the player barely managing any starts this term.
The Brazilian international has managed only 356 minutes of game time this term, while he has yet to start a game in the Premier League. However, the former Ajax winger’s stock in the market remains high, with Olympiacos joining the race to secure his services this month.
What next?
Widespread reports have painted a contradictory picture surrounding Antony heading into the winter transfer window. While some have suggested that a lifeline may be on the cards, others have claimed that Ruben Amorim could sanction a loan exit. The Sun has revealed that Manchester United are ready to facilitate a departure this month on a temporary agreement.
Olympiacos’s interest in the struggling winger is understandable. The Greek giants have only three wingers in the first-team squad, and the Manchester United attacker can alternate with Gelson Martins on the right flank. So, he has emerged as a viable target for the European regulars.
However, Olympiacos will face stiff competition from other clubs, with recent reports linking the 24-year-old Brazilian international with Real Betis. So, it will be interesting to see if he seals a temporary winter exit from Manchester United this month.
