Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for the Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey but have fallen behind in the race.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Tottenham Hotspur are now trailing Ipswich Town in the race to sign 26-year-old Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey. West Ham United are keen on the out-of-favour centre-back as well.
Ipswich Town are currently favourites to sign the Englishman on loan, and it remains to be seen how the situation develops. Godfrey played just 93 minutes of first-team football this season, and he needs more game time at this stage of his career. He needs to leave the Serie A club this month, and a move to the Premier League would be ideal for him.
Ipswich Town will be able to provide him with regular first-team action. The Tractor Boys are currently fighting for survival, and they need to tighten up at the back. Signing a quality central defender could prove to be a wise decision. Ben Godfrey was highly rated during his time in England, and it will be interesting to see if he can hit the ground running and improve Ipswich at the back.
Tottenham and West Ham want Godfrey
As for Tottenham, they need defensive reinforcements due to injury problems. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are injured right now, and Tottenham need more depth in the side. Ben Godfrey could be a useful squad player for them during the second half of the season. If Spurs manage to sign him on loan, it would be an inexpensive addition as well.
Spurs will be a more attractive destination for the player, but he needs to ensure that they will be able to provide him with regular game time. Sitting on the bench at a big club is unlikely to benefit him.
West Ham have looked vulnerable at the back this season, and they could use a central defender as well. The 26-year-old will give Julen Lopetegui more options to work with. Summer signing Jean Clair-Todibo has not been able to live up to the expectations, and Godfrey could compete with him for the starting spot. The competition for places will help the team improve.
The 26-year-old knows the Premier League well and he might be able to settle in quickly and make an instant impact. However, while West Ham and Tottenham are keen on signing the 26-year-old Englishman, his next destination seems to be Ipswich Town.
