Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly look to sign 31-year-old English international Sam Johnstone from fellow Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers this month.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Sam Johnstone is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants have been scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the winter transfer window. So, the 31-year-old Wolverhampton Wanderers shot-stopper has emerged as a target, with the club plotting a loan move.
Sam Johnstone and his topsy-turvy career
Sam Johnstone has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Wolverhampton Wanderers from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window. The Englishman has been a journeyman throughout his professional career, embarking on ten loan spells during his spell with Manchester United before joining West Bromwich Albion in July 2018.
The 31-year-old spent four years with West Brom before joining Crystal Palace. Johnstone left the South London club in the summer transfer window after losing his spot to Dean Henderson. However, Johnstone has not been a happy camper at Wolverhampton Wanderers, managing only seven Premier League appearances while conceding 17 goals.
That has not impacted the English international’s stock in the market, with a winter loan exit from the Molineux on the cards. A move across the Premier League might be on the menu for the shot-stopper, with Tottenham Hotspur vying for his signature.
London calling?
Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Sam Johnstone is understandable. The North London giants have been scouring the market for a goalkeeper since losing Guglielmo Vicario to a long-term ankle injury. While Fraser Forster has produced some impressive performances, the English shot-stopper has also been error-prone.
So, Tottenham should dip into the market for a goalkeeper before the winter transfer window shuts down, with Johnstone emerging as a viable target. Fortunately for the North London outfit, Wolverhampton Wanderers are ready to let the Englishman leave on a loan deal until the end of the 2024/25 season after Vitor Pereira installed Jose Sa as the first-choice goalkeeper.
So, a temporary stint with Tottenham Hotspur might be on the cards for Johnston after losing his spot to Jose Sa. It will be interesting to see if the North London outfit can land the 31-year-old English international in the coming weeks.
