Manchester United are reportedly interested in 24-year-old Uruguayan international Maximiliano Araujo, although Nuno Mendes is their top left wing-back target.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Maximiliano Araujo is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a new left wing-back, with the Sporting CP wide player emerging as a target. However, Nuno Mendes and Patrick Dorgu also feature on the Premier League club’s wishlist.
Who is Maximiliano Araujo?
Maximiliano Araujo has been a solid performer since joining Sporting CP from Deportivo Toluca in the summer transfer window. A native of Montevideo, the South American wide player spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the youth division at Montevideo Wanderers.
The 24-year-old has been a regular thus far for Sporting CP, amassing over 1,000 minutes of game time across 20 appearances for the Primeira Liga champions while chipping in with two goals and three assists. Amorim saw the potential to play Araujo as a left wing-back, which has brought the best out of him.
Meanwhile, the Uruguayan international has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe with his exploits for his club and country. Recent reports have linked Araujo with Manchester City, with Manchester United joining the race to secure his services.
Amorim reunion on the horizon?
Manchester United’s interest in Maximiliano Araujo is understandable. The Red Devils have been scouring the market for a new left wing-back ahead of the two transfer windows this year. While Luke Shaw continues to struggle with his persistent fitness issues, Tyrell Malacia has blown hot and cold since returning from a long-term layoff.
So, several candidates, including Nuno Mendes, have emerged on Manchester United’s radar. However, Araujo is also a viable target, considering his familiarity with Ruben Amorim’s system. Graeme Bailey has reported that the Red Devils “have done their due diligence on him in recent weeks”.
