Newcastle United abandon their pursuit of Evan Mooney

Newcastle United have reportedly abandoned their pursuit of St Mirren teenager Evan Mooney because they do not feel the need to add him to their academy.

According to Football Insider, Evan Mooney is no longer a target for Newcastle United ahead of January or beyond. The St Mirren teenager had seen links with a switch to the Magpies, who do not want to disturb the order of their academy ranks with an outside addition to those youth sides.

Newcastle United are in good form in the Premier League as they head into the January window, hoping to improve their current squad. They are also increasingly alert to opportunities to improve their academy ranks, although they have a particular order in the youth ranks, something the Magpies are not eager to disturb.

With more teams pouncing on the opportunity to bring some of the most talented youngsters from other academies, Newcastle United have a different approach. They are eager to provide more opportunities to players coming through their ranks instead of adding to the academy sides from the market.

In recent seasons, Lewis Mile, Elliot Anderson, and Alex Murphy have all entered the academy ranks at Newcastle United and have broken through to the first team. Adding to this setup from the outside could disrupt their plans for the youngsters already developing in the background.

They are looking at senior talents in the market to strengthen different positions. Signing a top talent for their academy ranks is not part of Newcastle’s plans ahead of January. This is why they have reportedly abandoned the pursuit of 17-year-old attacking prodigy Evan Mooney from St Mirren.

Newcastle United not keen on signing Evan Mooney

Mooney has recently seen his stature rise as he has broken through to the St Mirren first team. The 17-year-old attacking prodigy has played five times, notching two goals and an assist. Newcastle United abandoning the teenager’s pursuit will be good news for the Scottish side, as they are keen to develop him further and probably maximise his value.

As for Newcastle United, they have plenty of players coming through their ranks, and for now, they are focused on building the first team on priority. As for their pursuit of youngsters, more names might be linked in the media later on, but for now, they are not showing signs of abandoning their existing ideas.
