Manchester United set to attempt winter move for Viktor Gyokeres

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are reportedly all set to attempt a winter move for Sporting CP ace Viktor Gyokeres.

Ruben Amorim has not had the best of times since taking charge of Manchester United. The team has slipped down to 14th on the points table and if things don’t improve in the near future, they could be forced to fight for survival.

The Portuguese manager is looking at the winter transfer window as an opportunity to reinforce his squad and save the season. According to a report from the Daily Star, Amorim has asked people at the club to sign Viktor Gyokeres in the ongoing window.

Gyokeres has been on fire since joining Sporting in the summer of 2023. The Swedish international has been scoring goals for fun. He has 27 goals in as many outings this season. While the 26-year-old’s contract at the Portuguese club runs until the summer of 2028, he is unlikely to be around for long.

Manchester United want Gyokeres in January

Some of the biggest clubs in Europe have him on their wishlist but it seems Manchester United are all set to intensify their efforts to sign him in January. Marcus Rashford has gone down the pecking order at Old Trafford since the arrival of Amorim.

The United graduate doesn’t seem to have a future at the club and is expected to be on the move. Meanwhile, Joshua Zirkzee is also surplus to requirements and will be sold to the highest bidder in the coming weeks.

With the duo leaving, there is enough room for a new forward and Amorim wants to bring in the Swedish star who did wonders under him at Sporting. Both have strong relationships and it could work out in favour of United amidst interest in his services from across Europe.

But, it won’t be that straightforward a move as a potential transfer will cost around £80 million and it will have to be sanctioned by co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazers. While Sporting don’t really want to lose out on him mid-season, there is a release clause in his contract worth £80 million which United will have to pay in full to ensure the Portuguese club can’t stand in their way.
