Tottenham eyeing Ben Godfrey swoop, estbalish contact

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly look to sign 26-year-old English defender Ben Godfrey on loan from Serie A club Atalanta in the January transfer window.

According to a report by Football Insider, Ben Godfrey is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants are scouring the market for a defneder heading into the January transfer window. So, they have identified the Atalanta defender as a target, approaching the Serie A club regarding a loan move next year.

Ben Godfrey and his frustrating career

Ben Godfrey has seen his struggles continue since joining Atalanta from Everton in the summer transfer window earlier this year. A native of York, the Englishman spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from his hometown club, York City. However, he rose in prominence during his spell with Norwich City, with his exploits earning him a move to Everton.

The spell with Everton did not go as well as Godfrey planned, as he was in and out of the starting lineup in the four-year stint. However, the move to Atalanta has worsened the issues, as the 26-year-old has not even managed 100 minutes of game time across five appearances in all competition for La Dea.

However, the English defender’s stock in the market remains high, with several well-known clubs still interested in him. Tottenham Hotspur will be one of his prospective suitors in the January transfer window, with the North London outfit already approaching Atalanta regarding a short-term loan deal.

London calling?

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Ben Godfrey might be surprising, but it makes sense. The North London giants are in a spot of bother in the defensive unit amid the fitness issues plaguing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven thus far this season. In addition, Ben Davies is on the sidelines with an injury, leaving Radu Dragusin as the only recognised centre-back.

So, Tottenham should invest in a centre-back in the summer transfer window. Several candidates, including Pascal Struijk, have thus emerged on their radar, with Godfrey also a viable target for the North London outfit.

With Tottenham approaching Atalanta regarding a short-term loan move for the 26-year-old English defender, they have already set the wheels in motion. It will be interesting to see if the Premier League club can convince the high-flying Serie A club to sanction a temporary deal for the disgruntled Englishman.
