Ruben Amorim wants extended Manchester United stay for Harry Maguire, player hopeful of long-term future

Ruben Amorim has asked Manchester United to extend the stay of their English centre-back Harry Maguire beyond the ongoing season.

Harry Maguire was not really an important part of the Manchester United first-team under Erik ten Hag, and there were massive doubts about his future at the club. The arrival of Ruben Amorim has completely changed things up, and he is back in the mix.

According to a report from Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, the Portuguese manager now wants to ensure that their former skipper continues at the club for at least another season. Meanwhile, Maguire is hopeful of having a long-term future at Old Trafford.

Manchester United broke the bank and forked out a massive £80 million to sign Maguire back in 2019. He was a key part of their first team in the initial years and even wore the armband for a while. But, things went downhill for the Englishman after the arrival of Erik ten Hag.

He was stripped of his captaincy and became more of a backup player. Following the sacking of the Dutch manager and the arrival of Amorim, Harry Maguire has been given an opportunity to revive his United career and he has done wonders so far.

The 31-year-old is a completely different player in a back three, and he is showing that under the former Sporting CP boss. While Amad Diallo was the star of Manchester United’s win over rivals Manchester City, Maguire surely had an impressive outing.

Amorim wants a new deal for Maguire

With his current deal running out in the summer, multiple clubs are interested in signing Harry Maguire on a free transfer. But, Amorim is keen on having him around for longer. The Portuguese tactician has held talks with technical director Jason Wilcox about Manchester United at least taking up the option in his contract to extend his stay for another season.

Meanwhile, Maguire has no intentions of leaving the club and has been quite clear about it. He has made his desires known to the people at the club as well as other clubs that are keen on his signature. The English international also commented on his future this past weekend.

He wants to continue at Manchester United and is confident that he could have a long-term future at the club following the arrival of the Portuguese manager. Even if he can sign a pre-agreement with a foreign club in January, Maguire is not thinking about a potential exit.
