Manchester United scouting Alvaro Fernandez

Manchester United have recently watched former left-back Alvaro Fernandez in action, thus triggering rumours of a January move.

According to Give Me Sport, Manchester United are reportedly considering bringing Alvaro Fernandez back to the club. The former youth prospect, now an established left-back at Benfica was recently watched by club scouts in a Champions League game, as Ruben Amorim’s Premier Liga knowledge key to this move.

Manchester United will search for a new left-back and will probably bring a new player in the position if circumstances permit a transfer. The biggest issue for them in the January window is the availability of big funds to help Ruben Amorim bolster his squad, although they could explore some favourable moves.

One of them could be Alvaro Fernandez, a former youth prospect at Manchester United, now thriving in the Premiera Liga with Benfica. The 21-year-old defender was a regular with the Red Devils’ U-21 side, but never made a first-team appearance, before moving to Portugal for a modest fee.

He has since established himself as a key player for Benfica, and in a recent Champions League game against Bologna, he was named the man of the match. Incidentally, Manchester United scouts were present for that game to watch Fernandez in particular and may have returned with a glowing account of their observations.

Manchester United are indeed interested in re-signing Fernandez as they have a visible issue with their left-back situation. Tyrel Malacia has only returned from a long-term injury recently, but Luke Shaw has continued to spend time on the sidelines. Hence a player in that position seems like a priority, as the Red Devils could push for the Benfica star and beat off competition from rivals like Liverpool.

Manchester United can sign Alvaro Fernandez on the cheap

Manchester United can sign Alvaro Fernandez for a cut price fee close to a reported £16.5 million, which is due to some favourable clauses inserted when selling him to Benfica. The player does have lofty ambitions to play for a side like Real Madrid, and unless that happens, he might consider making a return to Old Trafford.

Originally, Fernandez has a release clause in his Benfica contract worth a reported £42 million, which does not apply to Manchester United. Ruben Amorim’s knowledge of the Portuguese league will prove crucial in this chase, as he might or might not view the player as someone who improves their current setup.
