Tottenham could cancel Matthew Craig’s loan at Barnsley in January to find a new solution for the midfielder’s immediate future.
According to Football Insider, Tottenham are seriously considering ripp[ing apart the loan agreement with Barnsley and bringing their midfielder Matthew Craig back to the club. Spurs are not considering integrating the 21-year-old midfielder into their first-team plans; instead, they are planning another loan.
Tottenham are expected to be active in the January transfer window, as Ange Postecoglou will consider strengthening more than one area of his squad. Their midfield does seem quite stacked at the moment, although their links to Angel Gomes suggest they could strengthen that area again. Others, like bringing in a wide attacker as well as a centre-back, are firmly on their agenda.
Leaving aside their first-team planning, Tottenham are also keeping a watchful eye on their young prospects spending time away from the club on loan. One of them is Matthew Craig, as Spurs are considering recalling the 21-year-old midfielder from his loan spell at League One side Barnsley.
Craig spent the second half of last season with League Two side Doncaster, making 20 appearances and playing a vital role in their campaign. On paper, playing for Barnsley is a promotion of sorts, as he has taken to life brightly in League One since the current season began.
Having missed all but one game in Barnsley’s first 15 games of the season, Craig has been an unused substitute in the last six games. The 21-year-old midfielder’s deal with Tottenham expires in 2026, and his recent lack of game time has the north Londoners worried about the prospect of seeing his current value drop.
Tottenham planning a new loan move for Matthew Craig
Tottenham are open to cancelling Craig’s loan deal at Barnsley and recalling the midfielder. Unfortunately, they are not considering integrating the 21-year-old into their first team setup. Still, they will look for a new loan opportunity in the market where he can continue to play regularly.
A host of EFL clubs might be interested in the London-born midfielder. Ideally, Craig is expected to stay in League One for the remainder of the season, as he is highly likely to depart Barnsley prematurely after six months of his loan deal.
