Liverpool submit contract offer to Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool have taken major steps towards securing the future of their skipper, Virgil van Dijk, by putting forward a contract renewal offer.

According to a report from The Athletic, Liverpool have taken the first major step towards securing the long-term future of Virgil van Dijk. The Reds have been in talks with the player over a new deal for some time and they have finally submitted a contract offer.

Van Dijk was one of the most important signings for the Merseyside club during the Jurgen Klopp era. The German manager convinced people at the club to fork out a massive fee to sign him at the start of 2018. The Dutch international has done wonders for the Reds since arriving at the club.

He has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world and has been an integral part of all the success they have had over the years. While he is already 33, the former Southampton star is still going strong and he is up there with the best players in his position.

Arne Slot has had an exceptional start to life at Liverpool. His team are top of the Premier League as well as the Champions League. While things are going great on the pitch, he has a lot to think about with the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Van Dijk running out at the end of the season.

Liverpool make moves to retain Van Dijk’s services

All three of them have been a key figure under Slot and their presence could be pivotal for the club going forward. Van Dijk will be 34 before the start of the next season but that doesn’t stop Liverpool from pushing to renew his contract.

Despite his age, the Reds believe he still has something to offer and they have been in talks with him for some time now. Those talks have progressed smoothly and the Merseyside club recently submitted an opening bid to keep the 33-year-old in their team beyond the summer of 2025.

Unfortunately, the initial bid fell short of the Dutch international’s expectations and there hasn’t been a breakthrough on the length of the contract as well. While nothing positive has come out of it yet, both parties remain in constant contact and a common ground could be reached soon.
