Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing 27-year-old Italian international Alex Meret from Serie A club Napoli.
According to a report by Sportmediaset, as relayed by Napoli Magazine, Alex Meret is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a shot-stopper who can be Andre Onana’s backup. So, the 27-year-old Napoli goalkeeper has emerged as a target for the Premier League heavyweights.
Alex Meret and his career so far
Alex Meret has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Napoli from Udinese. A native of Udine, he spent his formative years in Italy, passing through the academies at three clubs before graduating from the youth division at Udinese Calcio over a decade ago.
Napoli initially signed Meret on a season-long loan deal from Udinese in July 2018 before completing a permanent move 12 months later. While the 27-year-old has enjoyed impressive phases during his spell with Napoli, he has struggled for game time in other periods. He has been a regular for the Partenopei thus far this term, making 12 appearances across all competitions.
The Italian international has turned nearly 200 times thus far for Napoli while keeping 63 clean sheets and conceding 209 goals. Meanwhile, Meret’s stock in the market is high, with several high-profile clubs across Europe setting their sights on him. Recent reports have linked him with Arsenal, with Manchester United also among his prospective suitors.
Premier League move on the horizon?
Manchester United’s interest in Alex Meret is understandable. While at first glance, the links might surprise many, the Napoli shot-stopper can be a viable backup to the former Inter Milan and Ajax goalkeeper. With Altay Bayindir struggling for relevance since joining Manchester United last year, he has failed to make his mark.
Recent reports have claimed that Manchester United will dip their toes in the market for a goalkeeper in the 2025 summer transfer window. So, it is hardly surprising that Meret has emerged as a target for the Premier League heavyweights.
The 27-year-old Italian international will enter the final six months of his contract when the year ends. The situation has also alerted Inter Milan, although Napoli will look to tie the player to a new contract before taking a call on his long-term future.
