Tottenham keen on Anthony Patterson

Tottenham are preparing to move for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson ahead of January to cover for the injured Guglielmo Vicario.

According to The Sun, Anthony Patterson emerged as a target for Tottenham ahead of the January window. The north Londoners are facing a big problem with their goalkeeping depth following the injury to Guglielmo Vicario.

Tottenham looked good a week or so ago when they bulldozed through a hapless Manchester City side at the Etihad and scored four goals to defeat Pep Guardiila’s champions. However, that victory came at a huge cost, as goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario suffered a significant ankle injury.

The Italian has since undergone surgery for the injury and will now miss months out, meaning Spurs do not have the necessary depth in the position. Experienced keeper Fraser Forster has since taken over first-choice duties, but behind him, Spurs have little to rely upon.

Hence, a move for a keeper is the right decision, as they will need short-term cover for Vicario. Ahead of the January window, they have decided to bring in a new keeper, with Angers keeper Yahia Fofana firmly on their list

Meanwhile, they are also targeting Sunderland’s highly respected keeper Anthony Patterson. The 24-year-old English goalkeeper has been sensational for the Black Cats since he became their first choice, and the Championship side might sell for the right price, even though Patterson is vital for their objective of returning to the Premier League.

Is Tottenham the right opportunity for Anthony Patterson?

Patterson is firmly established as Sunderland’s No.1, and while he has been open to a top-flight move, the player might still view a secondary role as a step-down. He does have a big interest, with Arsenal watching the keeper with regularity and have been doing so for some time. The Gunners did consider him to replace Aaron Ramsdale in the summer.

Manchester United are also keen, although the interest from Tottenham could have a different effect here. Given Vicario’s injury, Patterson could see this move as an opportunity to stake a claim and beat Forster to the No.1 spot, although to do this, he might only have a small window. Hence, while Spurs are only coming for him in a secondary capacity, Patterson might see this as a chance to make his big move to the top tier.
