Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur are considering signing a new shot-stopper following a serious ankle injury to Guglielmo Vicario.
Tottenham have suffered a massive blow as Guglielmo Vicario has a fracture in his ankle. He was forced to undergo surgery and is now all set to be out for months. According to a report from The Telegraph, Ange Postecoglou is looking to sign a new goalkeeper in January to help cope with his absence.
Vicario arrived at the club in the summer of 2023 after making a name for himself at Empoli. He took over from Hugo Lloris as their new number one and has done a great job so far. While the 28-year-old has been criticised for his ability to deal with set-pieces, he has been a consistent performer for them. The Australian manager was quite happy having him as their go-to man in goal.
He has been involved in 15 games this season and has kept a clean sheet in four of those fixtures. Vicario had a sensational outing against Manchester City. Tottenham scored four past the defending champions and even managed to keep a clean sheet.
Vicario’s injury results in a change of plans for Spurs
While it was a massive win and it has helped them recover from the poor start to the new campaign, this victory came at a massive cost as Vicario fractured his ankle helping his team claim all three points. A challenge from Savinho before half-time did the damage.
The Italian international continued to feature in the game and played with pain. But, he later discovered that there was a fracture in his right ankle and he had no other option than to undergo immediate surgery. The 28-year-old will be sidelined for months and Postecoglou will now have to bank on 36-year-old Fraser Forster.
While Forster can do a decent job, the Australian manager seeks more quality. He was considering signing a new goalkeeper ahead of next season but the injury to Vicario has now forced the club to fast-track the process. They are looking at potential options to bring in during the winter transfer window.
