Tottenham unlikely to sell James Maddison in January amid dwindling role

Tottenham are not interested in letting go of James Maddison ahead of January, as the attacking midfielder still has a future at the North London club.

According to Give Me Sport, Tottenham have no interest in selling James Maddison ahead of the January transfer window. Despite some hiccups so far this season, the £40 million star is still expected to feature heavily and play a key role under Ange Postecoglou going forward.

Taking on the No.10 shirt from Harry Kane was always a heavy prospect for any player, let alone James Maddison when he arrived in a £40 million deal from Leicester City in the summer of 2023. The attacking midfielder immediately made an imp[act under new Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, but things have not panned out the way many had expected.

Maddison scored four goals and provided nine assists in the Premier League last term as Spurs missed out on a top-four place to Aston Villa. This season, despite a bright start, the £40 million star has somewhat faded away in the background, as Postecoglou has preferred to have a different kind of midfielder in his place.

Postecoglou wants more energy and legs in the middle. He has seemingly changed his strategy, which appears as a disadvantage for a player like Maddison. The win over West Ham United, in particular, was an example of the above, as the Tottenham boss withdrew the £40 million star at halftime despite the midfielder assisting for the Dejan Kulusevski equaliser.

He did start the next game, a narrow away loss to Crystal Palace, and has since started the next two games on the bench, playing a total of 14 minutes combined. Hence, there are doubts about whether Postecoglou is moving away from the idea of having a player like Maddison dictate the tempo in the attacking phase to midfielders who provide something different, like Pape Matar Sarr.

Tottenham not planning on Maddison’s sale

The reduced game time over the last two games, as well as the visible change in tactics from Postecoglou that moves away from Maddison, has sparked rumours of a possible exit in January. Spurs are certainly not even thinking about the idea of letting the £40 million star leave in the winter window, as they will keep him on board.

There have been some interesting links to other attacking midfielders recently, which further fuels speculation about Maddison. However, the former Leicester man will have enough opportunities to prove his worth to Postecoglou. A busy festive period lies ahead for Tottenham, and Maddison will be key to bringing in tactical shifts for the manager.
