Tottenham are preparing to activate the extension in Son Heung-min’s contract, as they are keen to protect his value.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham have begun the process of activating an extension in the current deal of star attacker Son Heung-min. The South Korean could be out of contract next summer, but Spurs are eager to extend his stay by another year to protect the player’s market valuation.
Son Heung-min has probably been Tottenham’s best player over the last decade after Harry Kane. With the latter now plying his trade at Bayern Munich since the start of last season, the South Korean has taken on the mantle of being the team’s talisman.
The nine-season veteran’s future situation is a bit complex at this stage, as his slight dip in form in 2024 has caused some concerns. Credible reports state Tottenham are not planning on contract talks with Son for the time being, as a decision could be made at the end of the season.
They had plans to activate an extension in his contract, as Son’s current deal expires next summer. Tottenham are eager to protect his valuation in the market, as a player of his quality would be an asset in a market that has Saudi clubs looking at some of the experienced players from teams.
Saudi Pro League clubs are indeed interested in Son Heung-min, and Tottenham will be aware of their spending power, which could see them fetch a considerable fee for the South Korean. Hence, Spurs are eager to protect his value beyond next summer, as the activation of the extension beckons.
Tottenham begin the extension process
The typical one-year extension in any player contract is always triggered before the January window, as there is a deadline to do so. With players into the final year of their deal, it is usually a risky period for the club to lose them to a pre-contract agreement in January, and hence, the additional year as a club option tends to act as protection.
With Son Heung-min, irrespective of whether Spurs open talks over a new deal, they are not about to let the player enter the final six months of his existing contract. Hence, they have begun the process of extending the South Korean’s deal via activating the extension, although that does leave the possibility of a departure open.
