Liverpool saving funds to complete top defender signing in January

Arne Slot’s Liverpool have reportedly set aside funds to make a marquee defensive signing in the winter transfer window.

According to a report from Football Insider, Liverpool will look to reinforce their backline in January, and they have saved funds to sign a marquee centre-back after having failed to add one during the most recent summer transfer window.

Arne Slot has done wonders at the Merseyside club since taking charge in the off-season. While everyone expected him to have a tough time in the initial phase after taking over from Jurgen Klopp, he has guided them to the top of the Premier League as well as the UEFA Champions League.

While the Reds are on the right track and everything seems to be going according to plan, Slot has identified a few areas that need reinforcement. The Dutch tactician wants to bring in a new centre-back in January on a priority basis.

The Merseyside club were after the signature of Crystal Palace sensation Marc Guehi during the summer. They tried everything in their power to sign the English international, but his £70 million valuation was way too high for them.

Liverpool could return for Guehi’s signature

Liverpool did have significant funds in the summer, but they hardly made any moves as they wanted to sign the perfect players for Slot’s system. The Reds have set aside funds to sign a world-class centre-back, and they will most likely return for the services of Guehi.

The Eagles could lower their demands as he will only have 18 months left on his deal, and it could tempt Liverpool into making a move. But, the Crystal Palace centre-back is not the only name on the Merseyside club’s wishlist, as they are looking at other candidates who can help them bolster their backline.

With Virgil van Dijk in the final phase of his career and his contract running out, signing a centre-back is necessary, and they will look to make the best use of the funds they have saved. Given the kind of start Slot has had at Anfield, people at the club want to back him by adding more quality to their squad in the winter. They want to do their best to help the Dutch manager push for major titles in the second half of the season.
