Arne Slot’s Liverpool are working hard to sign a new midfielder when the transfer window reopens in January.
Liverpool have started planning for the upcoming transfer window. According to a report from Football Insider, the Reds are laying the groundwork to sign a new midfielder in winter to bolster their squad and give Arne Slot the necessary depth to remain competitive in all competitions.
The Merseyside club have had an impressive start to the 2024/25 campaign under the new boss. They are top of the Premier League as well as the Champions League table. While it has been an exceptional start for them, Liverpool are looking to make some key additions in the winter to ensure they can challenge for both major titles right until the end.
After having a relatively quiet summer transfer window, the Reds will now look to use the funds available to bolster their squad. Signing a new midfielder was a top priority for them in the last window. They were in talks to bring Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi to Anfield.
While they were very close to acquiring his services, the Spanish international turned down the opportunity. After the Reds failed to make any additions to their midfield, they have seen the rise of Ryan Gravenberch in the last months. The Dutch international has made the defensive midfield role his own and has started all their league and UCL games.
Liverpool want to further bolster their midfield
Liverpool’s midfield also consists of Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Dominic Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott. But, they still seek more options in the centre of the park. The report suggests they have been working hard to bring in a new midfielder when the window reopens.
They have started looking at the market to identify an ideal candidate who can fit into Slot’s system and bolster their midfield. While they would love to bring in a new defensive midfielder, they won’t mind adding someone who can feature in multiple roles.
Since they didn’t really spend much in the summer, they do have the funds to work with and the people at the club are looking to back the new boss who looks to push for major titles.
