Liverpool are eager to lure Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund next summer as a possible replacement for Virgil van Dijk.
According to Caught Offside, Nico Schlotterbeck has emerged as a key target for Liverpool ahead of next summer. The Borussia Dortmund star is a big name in the market, and several other sides could enter the chase if he was made available for a transfer. The Reds view him as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk.
Nico Schlotterbeck has steadily increased in stature over the last few seasons, especially since his move to Borussia Dortmund in 2022. The former Freiburg defender, now an established German international, could yet make an extensive career move away from Germany, as many top clubs could enter the chase should he become available in the market.
The Bundesliga star was on Real Madrid’s radar following their failure to lure Leny Yoro in the summer. However, his asking price might have been a problem for the Spanish giants to make a move at that time, although there’s no indication they would not return for him in the future.
Arsenal had been interested before, while Liverpool is the latest to think about signing him next summer. The report claims that the Mersyesiders are open to paying around €50 million for his signature. Knowing how Dortmund operate, they will undoubtedly demand a lot more from the Bundesliga star, as he could be a coveted name in the market looking closely at top left-sided central defenders.
Liverpool view him as a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk and are reportedly willing to offer him €7 million a season in wages. It’s an interesting proposition for the German international, who could assume an important role in Arnew Slot’s side. However, any move will depend on the finances involved. Schlotterbeck’s profile would be ideal for the Reds in their quest to replace Van Dijk when he departs.
He has been linked with Newcastle United as well.
Will Virgil van Dik leave Liverpool?
Contrasting reports suggest the Dutchman could leave or even stay. Liverpool are reportedly working to resolve his contractual situation, although Van Dijk has not received a proposal from the club so far.
Saudi Arabia and some of the European heavyweight clubs are heavily interested in the Dutch veteran. Staying at Liverpool could also be an option, although, as things stand, things are pointing towards a possible exit from the club next summer on a free transfer.
