Barcelona will reportedly compete with Real Madrid in the race to secure the services of 26-year-old Liverpool defensive mainstay Trent Alexander-Arnold.
According to a report by talkSPORT, Trent Alexander-Arnold is the subject of interest from FC Barcelona. The Liverpool defensive mainstay is also a long-term target for Real Madrid. However, the reigning La Liga champions will face stiff competition from their bitter rivals for the 26-year-old full-back.
The Trent Alexander-Arnold situation
Trent Alexander-Arnold has gone from strength to strength since breaking into the first-team squad at Liverpool FC. A native of Liverpool, the English progressed through the ranks at the Merseyside club before making his senior bow as a highly-rated teenager several years ago.
The 26-year-old has been a mainstay at the back for Liverpool for over half a dozen years and has become the vice-captain since Jordan Henderson’s departure last year. Alexander-Arnold has turned out over 300 times thus far for Liverpool while chipping in with 19 goals and 83 assists. However, the player faces an uncertain future at Anfield.
The English international has entered the final 12 months of his contract with Liverpool, with the talks between the two parties not progressing as well as the club would like. Recent reports have claimed that Alexander-Arnold will prioritise signing a new deal with Liverpool. However, the uncertainties surrounding his future have piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid.
La Liga move on the horizon?
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been on Real Madrid’s radar for a long time. The reigning La Liga champions are reportedly in constant contact to sign the Englishman from Liverpool. However, a January move might also be on the cards due to Dani Carvajal’s season-ending knee injury.
Real Madrid will face stiff competition from Barcelona for Alexander-Arnold’s signature, with the Blaugrana failing to sign a right-back in the summer transfer window. With Jules Kounde preferring to play as a centre-back, the Liverpool mainstay can allow that to happen if a Bosman move sees the light of day.
However, recent reports have claimed that the 26-year-old English full-back has agreed to join Real Madrid. So, Barcelona and Liverpool face a tall order to have the services of the experienced wide player in the 2024/25 season.
