Wolves unwilling to sign Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo

Wolves will not be making a move to sign Liverpool defensive midfielder Wataru Endo during the winter transfer window.

Wataru Endo’s future has been up in the air for a while now and Wolves have been seen as a potential destination for the Japanese international. But, according to a report from Football Insider, Gary O’Neil’s team are not keen on signing the former VfB Stuttgart midfielder.

Endo made the move to Liverpool in the summer of 2023. After failing to sign their top defensive midfield targets, Jurgen Klopp decided to bring the Japanese veteran midfielder to Anfield to help cope with the loss of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

The 31-year-old did a decent job for the Reds in his debut season. But, things haven’t been that great for him in the 2024/25 season. He has been on the pitch for just 85 minutes and 82 of those have come in an EFL Cup fixture.

Ryan Gravenberch has made the number six role his own under Arne Slot leading to Endo being kept on the bench. His lack of game time has resulted in reports suggesting that the Japanese international could be on the move in January.

Wolves don’t want to sign Wataru Endo

He has been linked with quite a few top clubs and Wolves are one of them. But, the Wolverhampton-based club are not interested in Endo’s services and they will not be making any moves to sign him during the winter transfer window.

They are well-stocked in the centre of the park and will prioritise other positions in January. Reinforcing the backline could be one of their priorities. Wolves don’t look keen on signing him and Liverpool are also reluctant to lose him mid-season.

Liverpool keen on keeping hold of Endo

The Reds only have limited options in the centre of the park and the 31-year-old is the only defensive midfielder in their entire squad. As a result, they do not want to lose out on Endo. The Merseyside club want to reinforce their midfield and ensure they keep all their existing options.

While Endo might not be playing regular football at this stage, he is an important part of Arne Slot’s first team and is expected to have an important role in the late phase of the season.
