Arsenal have done considerable groundwork on Benjamin Sesko

Arsenal expert Charles Watts believes Benjamin Sesko is near the top of the Gunners’ list of striker targets, as they could return for him.

According to Charles Watts on Caught Offside, Arsenal are still in the mix for Benjamin Sesko and would ideally return to sign the Slovenian forward. The RB Leipzig star was chased by the Gunners in the summer but chose to stay put. That decision has not spoiled any relationships between parties, as the north Londoners did plenty of groundwork.

A transfer is not just about identifying a player and then spending the money to sign that star. Clubs take up a lot of groundwork in the background, which allows them to study a player better and also involves lots of talks between all parties before club-level negotiations commence.

As per Arsenal expert Charles Watts, the club has put some important groundwork on top striker target Benjamin Sesko. They were very interested, with some reports suggesting they only enquired about the Slovenian despite links to many other names.

Arsenal are expected to bring a new striker on board in the future, and despite suggestions they had walked away from their pursuit of Sesko, that may not be the case. Watts believes the Gunners could return for Sesko next summer, as his decision to stay at RB Leipzig in the summer has not damaged any relationships.

Arsenal did scout Sesko during a recent Champions League game, as those observers were also reportedly watching another target, Dusan Vlahovic. However, the Serbian might no longer be of interest to Mikel Arteta, although the 21-year-old could be the player Arsenal go all out for next summer.

Arsenal looking at several other striker names

Arsenal might be interested in a deal for Sesko going forward, but the Slovenian is not alone on their shortlist, which does feature other names. Soon-to-be free agent Jonathan David is an interesting name that would excite Arteta, while Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush is also being considered.

The latter has been in top form in the Bundesliga, as Arsenal were one of the teams watching him closely in a recent game. Hence, the Sesko link might have some legs, but the likes of Marmoush and others are also increasingly becoming big targets for the Gunners ahead of next summer.
